SES Volunteers Respond to Destructive Winds3 August 2010, 8:40am SES volunteers have responded to over 20 Requests For Assistance (RFA) overnight due to destructive winds. Destructive winds can cause major damage and may be accompanied by heavy rainfall. The SES advise: •Before a storm, clear any loose items from around your home, yard or balcony. These can become dangerous missiles when there is severe weather •Listen to the radio station for information, updates and advice •Bring children and pets indoors and away from windows •Park your car under secure cover and away from trees •If outdoors, seek secure shelter away from trees •Stay clear of any fallen trees, powerlines and damaged buildings •Do not go sightseeing For emergency help in floods and storms, call the SES on 132 500. For life-threatening emergencies, call 000. Some of the more recent significant wind gusts include: 122km/h at Point Perpendicular at 8:30pm Monday, 107km/h at Wollongong at 12:01am and 102km/h at Sydney Airport 1:31 am and 139km/h at Wottamolla at 1:34am. |
